This winter I bought a book: "Expressive Drawing" by Steven Aimone. The book emphasizes line and mark, rather than rendering a specific object, which can be a barrier to self-expression. I was intrigued by the process his students went through and it brought me back to similar lessons when I was painting in college.
Exercises start off simple and quick, encouraging participants to work on instinct and feeling, which is my intent for my new acrylic series. Later exercises focus on detail and refinement. Most of the images are 24'x36" or larger.
I did the exercises and adapted them to fit my purpose as studies and preliminary drawings for my acrylics. I restricted myself to just the black and white paint, and did have horses in mind as my subject. Over the next few days/weeks I will share a few of them with you. Some have already turned into paintings, some will in the future and some will be just as they are. The first one is above.
This drawing is based on the exercise 'The Great Coverup'.
