The English word spirit comes from the Latin word spiritus, meaning "breath", but also "spirit, soul, courage, vigor".  The word "spirit" can be used in two related contexts, one metaphysical and the other metaphorical.

In Two Spirits the word is used metaphysically as an energy present individually in all living things.  A spirit develops and grows as an integral part of a living being.  This concept of the individual spirit occurs commonly in 'animism' - the belief that non-human entities are spiritual beings; that they embody some kind of life-principle...

Horses are some of these 'spirits' with much to share and teach...
