One of the most favorite parts of my trip to New Mexico was visiting and touring the Monero Mustangs sanctuary. I took over 500 photos...
On over 4000 acres, 120 wild mustangs rescued from slaughterhouses and other perilous situations graze and call Yellow Hills Ranch their home.
Sandi Claypool founded Monero Mustangs in 2000, and it became a non-for-profit in 2003. A compassion to preserve and protect a small band of vanishing 'El Rito' Spanish mustangs propelled the vision of Monero Mustangs. In 2008 Monero Mustangs moved to 'Yellow Hills Ranch' in Tierra Amarilla NM, calling this ranch their home.
In addition to El Rito mustangs, mustangs from other regions such as the Placita's, the Pryor's, Salt River Maricopa Pima mustangs, along with Navajo mustangs and special individual mustangs have been re-homed there.
With wild mustang herds across the west vanishing, the importance of wild horse sanctuaries continue to play a vital role in the preservation and protection of our America's wild horses. It was an awesome experience to see the wild mustangs in their natural environment.
