Thanks, Carol... good question! When I have no restrictions on color choice by clients, I think about colors for the background that enhance but don't overpower the animal.
Sometimes I try 3 or 4color schemes in a background. They usually flow naturally during the blocking-in process but if they don't, I stop the painting until the initial background layer is blocked in.
I usually have 2 layers of colro on the background and 3 on the subject... some pieces have more layers, and plein airs usually have less.
Awesome one, Carol. Perfect background color for Fritz, too. Is it difficult to decide on the background?
